Chapter 16

Though the others clearly expected him to take them back to the headquarters, John had a different destination in mind.

The docks. Or more specifically, the area that Bryant and his wife had purchased to house his latest creation.

“Father!” Mary rushed forward as Bryant walked out to meet them. “Are you well enough to travel already?”

“I am fine, Mary. Don’t worry about me.” Though he waved away his daughter's worries, Bryant couldn’t hide his pale skin and lack of strength. John knew that he was still recovering from the curse, but the after-effects would linger for weeks, if not months.

And they didn’t have the time to wait for him to get over it entirely.

But the danger wasn’t all that great. Several of the high ranks from Heaven’s Shield had been assigned to protect the master transmuter as he went about his work, and they were rotated out at a steady rate to ensure that he always had the strongest guard in place.

Then again, John doubted that he’d have been able to keep the man away from his work even if he had wanted to.

Bryant was the type to uber-focus on his work, and that obviously included the secret project John had requested. It was no surprise that he had outright moved to the workshop at the docks to continue his experimentation, despite the long arguments it had caused with his wife.

John followed him into the side office slash personal workshop where the genius focused on smaller projects, and through into the cavernous space that took up the rest of the building.

“This— How?” Louise staggered a little as Bryant's masterpiece came into view. It was so large that everyone had to crane their necks to see the top, but that wasn’t the most shocking thing about the sight.

“It’s a ship.” Nima stared up at the vessel, her eyes wide with wonder. “I thought no technology could work, but it doesn’t have any sails.”

“Old tech is irrelevant! Magic is the future!” Bryant raced up to the side of his creation and patted the smooth, painted hull affectionately. “She can travel the seas and oceans, no matter the weather, no matter the storm! Nothing can stop her—”

“Nothing?” John interrupted the craftsman’s wild speech with a slight smile. Bryant paused and turned away, irritated and embarrassed in equal measure.

“Well, almost nothing. I can’t rate it if you go up against a titan or something like that.”

The fact that the vessel might fare poorly against one of the strongest existences on the new world was a point of shame for Bryant, but John couldn’t quite believe how far he’d come. In such a short space of time, Mary’s father had risen from an unfortunate, cursed soul with
